Legazpi City (Jan. 4, 2017) – The Department of Justice (DOJ) dismissed reports linking Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV to the stabbing of high profile inmate Jaybee Sebastian as hearsay.
According to Sec. Vitaliano Aguirre, there is no direct evidence connecting the senator to the incident that happened inside the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in September 28 last year.
The secretary reacted to initial media reports about the matter after suspect-inmate in the incident, Tomas Donina, admitted in an affidavit that a naval officer ordered him to stab Sebastian.
Donina himself was also a member of the Philippine Navy and was housed together with other high-profile inmates at the NBP at the time of the alleged prison riot.
Aguirre surmised that the speculation may have surfaced because Sen. Trillanes was a former naval officer although his name was never mentioned in Donna’s affidavit.
Trillanes is a known Duterte critic and an ally of Senator Leila de Lima whom Sebastian linked to the drug trade inside the prison facility.
With this, Aguirre announced that no cases can be filled against Sen. Trillanes as far as the attempted killing of Jaybee Sebastian is concerned.
At present, the secretary revealed that Sebastian, through his lawyer, has sought to be detained at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for security reasons. (J. Garalde)
